There have been a lot of weird breaking email headlines this week. My favorite was from Friday: “A week of death and chaos comes to an end in a hail of gunfire and explosives.” Cuz, yup, that about sums it up.

But I like this one from earlier today, too. A sealed complaint. That’s how they communicate to you that they are displeased with your bomb shenanigans: A complaint. In writing.

The digital divide thus represents a sociocultural divide: In India, those who use social media are more likely to live in cities, hold a passport, and share values with social media users in the West. By relying too heavily on social media, journalists may find that their coverage skews toward a narrow readership. One Australian journalist told us that the rape protests gained prominence on Twitter “because [social media] is city-based and at the center of the life of the middle class, university students, and mobile professionals.” The journalist from Neue Zürcher Zeitung told us “it is easy to share ideas and read articles of colleagues or see what intellectuals think.” What’s more difficult is to get beyond that narrow demographic and understand the views of Indians whose voices are not heard on social media.

incidentally: the storyboard project automagically creates storyboards from subtitled video and is way rad. i wonder: could such a program pull out the corresponding images of select non-verbal subtitles?

So I just learned there’s a weird similarity between the first Sirena Beach mission in Super Mario Sunshine and the end of The Shining. No, really. It’s actually a remarkable coincidence. Observe the creepy menta shape in the video, and then compare this passage from The Shining:

From the window of the Presidential Suite he thought he saw a huge dark shape issue, blotting out the snowfield behind it. For a moment it assumed the shape of a huge, obscene manta, and then the wind seemed to catch it, to tear it and shred it like old dark paper. It fragmented, was caught in a whirling eddy of smoke, and a moment later it was gone as if it had never been.
